Bronze sculpture “She is Alive” by Jerald D. Evans, Carver Museum and Cultural Center, 2011. This bronze sculpture commemorates the first three African American firefighters hired by the City of Austin in 1952. This marked a significant historical moment in the years leading up to the Civil Rights Movement. For future generations of residents and visitors, this memorial will convey the impact of these men’s lives and honor their service to the city.
